Gyllene Tider – avskedsturnén documentary on TV4

During the tour we could already sense there would be a GT40 documentary later because of the filmings at each concert and with more cameras out at Ullevi and in Kalmar. Gyllene Tider – avskedsturnén (Gyllene Tider – the farewell tour) premiered on TV4 on 26th December. The story about a pop band that conquered ... Read more

Gyllene Tider 2.019 – en sista refräng

When earlier this year, months before the GT40 tour it turned out that there would be a book about Gyllene Tider written by Jan-Owe Wikström and photographed by Anders Roos, I knew the end result would be fab. This duo created another wonderful book, Alla tiders Gyllene Tider 6 years ago, but not only that. ... Read more

Det svenska popundret – The Swedish Pop Phenomenon

2 months ago SVT broadcast a documentary about modern Swedish music’s journey around the world. I just had the time now to watch it and since many fans asked for translation, I thought I would summarize it for them. The part with Roxette in it has a more detailed summary, of course. The documentary consists ... Read more

#TURMVLG 23: Fading like a Flower, Part 4. (Director: Doug Freel, Producer: Lisa Hollingshead, 1991): Do you remember the first time we spoke about FLAF? The first part was about Stortorget, and there we mentioned the Swedish Academy which chooses the annual Nobel Prize winners. After the certificates and medals are handed over, a banquet with 1.300 guests takes place, and that happens at Stadshuset, Stockholm's city hall (not to be confused with the town hall). And if you wa...lk up the stairs from the banquet you enter the Golden Hall, where not only the Nobel Ball is being held after the Nobel Banquet but also where the interior scenes for FLAF were recorded. The Golden Hall was actually meant not to look golden at all until an anynomous person donated a lot of money around 1918 and 18.6 million mosaic pieces could be applied to the walls along with 11 kg of gold leaf. Another location used in the video is the tower of Stadshuset where we can see Per standing 73 m above the place Marie swam with the ducks from Stars. #TURMVLG 22: The Centre of the Heart (Director: Jonas Åkerlund, Producer: Nicola Doring, 2001): Oh? After all these interesting places we're in a studio now? Cameras and lights, cables and screens, backdrops in unpronouncable colors, have TDR gone nuts now? Yes, we're nuts sometimes and obviously you like this but this is not the point here. No, this super psychedelic scenery is indeed... a hotel. You can find it at the west coast of the USA, quite in the middle between San F...rancisco and Los Angeles. The name is: Madonna Inn. What's its story, you ask? We'll try to make it short although actually it's very interesting. It all began in 1958, when Alex Madonna built a hotel with 12 average rooms which would become 40 rooms one year later due to high demand. Good thing, you say? Wait for it. The good thing actually was, that the motel burnt down a few years later which gave Madonna (the owner, not the singer!) the opportunity to start from scratch. A bit later, there were 110 rooms, all in different shapes and colors (when we say different colors, we mean mostly pink here). The Madonnas love pink, so you see pink wherever possible in this hotel. Yes, there is red and yellow, too, but the hotel is notorious for the pink overdose. That made many celebrities like Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Barbra Streisand or Debbie Harry come and stay there just out of curiosity. One other thing that this place is famous for (so famous that "Weird Al" Yankovic mentioned it in a song) is the urinal in the men's room (sure, where else) which looks like a waterfall. If you really want, there are videos of it on Youtube. Roxette were the first to make a music video there (if you don't count in the 1987 movie "Aria" which is rather hard to watch with the sound on), many others followed. The video itself was censored on many tv stations (note: if you need a scandal, book Åkerlund) for this certain hole-in-one golf scene. #TURMVLG 21: How Do You Do! (Director: Anders Skog, Producer: Ola Holmgren, 1992): How do you do - do you do - the things that you do! What an uplifting song and what a fitting video to it! Anders Skog was the director for The Big L. as well, maybe you can spot the similarities in style, the love for fresh ideas in the clips. The video to HDYD was recorded on a rooftop in Stockholm, just a tiny bit out of the centre. It was actually this clip that started my interest in this ...series because I always wanted to know the exact spot this video was made in. So comparing viewing angles and house facades with aerial footage brought the solution: We are on the roof of Fiskargatan 1a in Stockholm, a building that resembles elements of a roman castle while fitting perfectly in its surroundings. Inside you find the shop "Konstnärernas Centralköp", basically a store for artists where they can buy their material for painting and other artwork. Sometimes they use the roof for parties but normally it's closed for the public. In the video itself you find various sequences from the good old times, among others with The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, to name just a few. In the short scenes where you can grasp a bit of background, you can see the old town, Gamla Stan, where several other videos, among them FLAF, were recorded. There's also the Royal Castle. #TURMVLG 20: Fireworks, Part 3. (Director: Michael Geoghegan, Producer: Louise Knight, 1994): Yes, Fireworks again, and there will be part 4 some day! Looks like we're running out of time, this calendar is ending soon but we have so much more to tell you! Now, the lighthouse scene in Fireworks: It was made in a small village called Dungeness in Kent/England. You may have heard this name before if you're very much into rock history and especially Pink Floyd. The sleeve for the...ir album A COLLECTION OF GREAT DANCE SONGS was photographed there, to be precise in front of Seagull cottage (don't look for it, it burnt down in the early 1980s). The other thing Dungeness is known for is the huge grey block of concrete that appears directly behind the lighthouse if you watch carefully. It's the Dungeness Nuclear Power Station. You also find one of Europe's longest shingle beaches (which is a problem for the power station as this isn't exactly the most stable underground you can imagine for a building like that) and in the old fishermen cottages live artists now. The Prodigy, Lighthouse Family (yes, really!) and Nicki Minaj all made music videos there, to name just a few. If you want, you can climb up the lighthouse and watch some birds in the Dungeness National Nature Reserve or even marry there. Just a hint for the eager fan. #TURMVLG 19: Anyone, Part 2. (Director: Jonas Åkerlund, Producer: Nicola Doring, 1999): We promised a 2nd part and there will even be a 3rd one for this video. So, last time, we were in Lisbon, now we are not far away from there, on a peninsula called Troia. We see a hotel, some parks, Marie at the pool. Well, these scenes weren't all made in the same place. Let's have a look. The pool scenes and the ones where Marie walks among this futuristic architecture were made in an al...ready then abandoned hotel area which got completely demolished in 2007. The area was totally restructured after this, and you wouldn't recognize a single item there nowadays. If you use Google Earth and set the clock back to 2006 or earlier, you can still see the old hotel. (see Location 1) Yet, the tall building in the beginning is still there, and this is also where the interior scenes were shot. Today, it's called Aqualuz Troia Mar&Rio Family Hotel and you can book your next vacation there. Or in the next hotel we will introduce to you soon enough... #TURMVLG 18: You Don't Understand Me. (Director: Gregg Masuak, Producer: Phil Barnes, 1995): Beautiful and arty, this video - but where was it made? Well, there was confusion to begin with. In the TDR archives, we found "New Forest National Park, UK". To double-check we asked the one member of our team that lives closest to this spot (we won't give away his name here but it's Paul) and he insisted that it must have been Dartmoor. Good, so we asked Per who instantly replied th...at they made the video in France. Oh, and he wondered if he was even there in person. We checked the video and it turned out he actually was present, at least for a second, in the background. Next one to ask was the director, a really funny guy named Gregg Masuak and here's what he said: "I actually don’t recall myself as it was one of the very few videos I did that I was literally taken from the airplane from Los Angeles where I was, shoved in a car and driven to the location. It was actually torrential freezing rain the entire two days shoot, the wettest, bleakest physical experience I’d had - despite its immense creativity and good vibes!". But he also promised to get the information we needed. So he asked the producer, Phil Barnes, who seems to be a well organized chap and confirmed that it was indeed the New Forest NP. Still which spot exactly, remains unclear unless someone here in the audience knows the area well enough to point us to the precise location. Update: Trinkerry Samba found the spot: " It’s a place called ‘Ashley walk’ or ‘snake road’ in the New Forest, Hampshire, England." Thank you!
