Per's 60 for 60. #17 Första pris (First Prize). Taken from the first Nashville album "En vacker natt," a duet with Helena Josefsson this was meant to become a Roxette song, Per claims. Now that may certainly be true, while the song is also recorded in English under the name "The Finest Prize" it seems to us that the Swedish lyrics are more flowing and thought-thru than its English counterpart. Maybe it's just us, but we love the song a lot anyway. The Swedish one is obviously better according to our chart. Helena's vocals are just amazing, and Per is also doing very well. Also a hit during the Swedish summer tour, not all gigs got it, but those which did, wow! #per60

In case you want a second opinion on our #per60 posts every day, head over to http://roxettediaries.tumblr.com. We heard that Stevo reads this blog first thing every morning. Hugs and thanks to Sarah Harkins!

#Per60 - #28

I have a party in my head (I hope it never ends). Hmmm, everyone likes this song too, so I guess I do not need to give an opinion - it’s a part of gigs, it’s a part of soundtracks and it most...

Writing and working on the top 10...

Per's 60 for 60. #18 T-T-T-Take It! Yes we're back to Per Gessle's world... I guess we never left it completely? This was written the summer of '94 when Per was inspired by "Sleeping in My Car" to write guitar-driven powerpop for Roxette. But Marie wanted to take a break so this and many others ended up on "The World." Per doesn't like breaks, but we know that too, right? The lyrics are again not very Per, a story about an abused woman who he wants to run away. The melody is awesome. #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #19 Vilket håll du än går (Any Direction You Go). The opening track on "Mazarin" is a sweet declaration of love. Wherever you go, I will follow. Short and sweet. The girl is apparently leaving him, but that won't stop him. Jag är där/Jag kommer alltid att vara där/Mmm, jag är här/Jag kommer alltid att vara här "I'm there, I will always be there. I'm here, I will always be here." He loves her. I hope it works out for him, her, them. #per60

TDR presents: Per Gessle's Roxette's Unofficial Tour Book 2018

It's time for Xmas again, and this time The Daily Roxette goes all in with a specially made Xmas present for all of you!

Per's 60 for 60. #20 Lay Down Your Arms. Down to the final 20! Also: Merry Xmas! A perfect song to have on Xmas eve, don't you think? This is the closing track of "The World According to Gessle" and even if it's not closing this list, it's still worthy of being in the top 20. Yes many other songs are too, but there are only 20 spots in the last 20 spots... This song seems to be about trying to convince a girl he's the Man for her. We never get to hear the results, but hopefully it works out for him. Whatever you planned for this summer/Whatever you’ll read in my palm/There’s no lookin’ back babe/surrender your heart, yea yea yea Sweet! Merry X again! #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #21 Varmt igen (Warm. Again) Back to 2003 and "Mazarin" this was originally recorded by Peter Jöback since he heard the demo and insisted on recording it. It's very similar to Per's version. The lyrics are nice, and have sort of a double meaning. It can be about a cold winter which turned to spring, but it can also refer to newly found love. Let's go with the latter? There was an instrumental version featured in the movie "Small Apartments" but I can't for the life of me hear it in the movie. A very good song, with a neat little melody and good lyrics. Respect. #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #22 There Is My Baby. A classic mid-tempo rocker with edgy guitars from "The World According to Gessle," an album which was released in quite a few countries. Saw it in Canada for instance. We need more songs like this, don't you think? The lyrics aren't really classical Gessle, but feels more like a Springsteen song, or could have been a Gyllene Tider song in English. At any rate, we like it a lot. #per60

Roxette

MERRY XMAS Y’ALL! Time flies indeed when you’re having fun and there were certainly lots of fun buzzing around in 2018! Thanks to all of you for jumping on the trains once again and enjoying/discussing/dissecting the music + the projects + the history + the future + the clothes + the guitar picks + the meatballs + the drinks. We like it like that. And… surprises will pop up in 2019. That’s a promise! Plenty of love + happiness and a very merry Feliz Navidad once more to all of you all around the mighty Tellus. Cheers, P&M

Per's 60 for 60. #24 Wish You the Best. Yes, back to "The World According to Gessle" and a adorable ballad. For you with sharp ears you may recognize Roxette's "April Clouds" from "Good Karma," yes you are correct, it's basically the same song. We talked to Per about it and he told us that "April Clouds" in fact was the first version of the song. Per is very gracious in this song, "you left me and broke my heart, but hey, I wish you all the best"... (yes our interpretation.) Not sure I could handle that, could you? #per60

Wish You The Best

Per's 60 for 60. #24 Always Breaking My Heart. We delve back into the demo waters again. This was also never recorded or released by Per, or any of his entities. It was however released by Belinda Carlisle of the GoGo's. The second single off "A Woman and A Man" was fairly successful. Per and crew recorded and produced the song, so it would "sound right." Per had written the song "Liberty" for Belinda, but she didn't like it (rightly so as well,) so she asked if he had any others laying around, which he of course did. Anyways, Per's version is a nice, rocky thing which he should have used. Maybe with The Lonely Boys? Once again, sad lyrics. #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #25 Theme from "Roberta Right". Number 25! The mighty 25 biggest songs from Per Gessle! And what a way to start them off... Roberta Right was recorded for "Party Crasher" but was left off the album because "it didn't fit." Per has later admitted he was wrong, and that it indeed would have been a killer on the album. Now it was reduced to a B-side of "Sing Along." The Theme is written by Per and son Gabriel. Gabriel was sitting in his room playing with something humming "Ro-ro-ro-robot dans" or something to that effect. Per grabbed his guitar and wrote the song. Sometimes it's too easy. #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #26 Far Too Close. One of the duets Per recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. This one he sings together with Savannah Church, of the Church Sisters. A beautiful ballad about - you guessed it - sad love... This was meant to be recorded with Alison Krauss, but Per met her in the elevator at the hotel and she was furious (at someone else) so he didn't dare asking her to sing. Instead he asked someone at the studio if they knew of any good voice that was similar to Alison's. Savannah came up. She nailed the song in 20 minutes. Per asked her if she ever sang out of tune. Savannah didn't understand the question! There's a remix of this on the "Small Town Talk" vinyl album that's not... good... "Being alone was never known to be easy" #per60

After 60 #marie60 and more than 30 #per60 posts, it seems that some of our readers still wonder how we compiled these lists. Well, it's very simple, you find the details in this article. Per Gessle’s “60 for 60” #per60

It’s Per’s 60th birthday soon so we came up with a most splendid idea. You’ll love this. Again!

Per's 60 for 60. #27 Jo-Anna Says. Oh yes Jo-Anna says, and she says a lot. I'm thinking this is the same girl as in "Substitute" - a mean one. We've met Jo-Anna before, in the 1989 Gyllene Tider song (actually recorded in 1987) '"Jo-Anna farväl!" and to be frank, she wasn't very sympathetic back then either. A conniving little wench is what she is. Per though, still is a believer. She's almost his, just a little longer. The song itself is very Paul McCartney-esque (think "When I'm 64",) which is funny since Per is a Lennon fan. Good song, nice video and all in all a happy listen, unless you listen to the lyrics. This was, together with "C'mon" the first single from "Plumber." #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #28 I Have a Party in My Head (I Hope It Never Ends). Whoa, the master of long titles and brackets strikes again... Once again a song from "Son of a Plumber" and this particular one was performed during the fall tour with Malin-My and Helena on recorders. The lyrics and the title both sound like some bad trip on acid, but then again, who wouldn't want to have a party in one's head? I certainly wouldn't mind at all. "Party" was also featured in the motion picture "Small Apartments," both the normal one and an instrumental version. One does wonder what went thru Per's mind when he wrote this. "It's so beautiful and surreal." #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #29 Brilliant Career. We're talking the top half of the chart. We're talking Son of a Plumber again, and most of all we're talking about a song that's absolutely adorable! Lyrics wise it may not be a "The Look" or "Opportunity Nox," but the melody and the performance are aces. Listen to that flow! And Helena's "More tea, anyone?" is the icing on the cake. Again, a terribly lovely tune. #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #30 Mannen med gitarr (The Man with the Guitar.) Halftime! This is a demo from 2002, written for "Mazarin," and never used or released because Clarence hated it! It was however recorded by Monia Sjöström in 2003, with slightly different lyrics since she's obviously a girl. Per sings "Hey you with the guitar, play something I understand, something I think about. Maybe something about when I met her eyes the first time. I want to hear that song." But it was a long time ago. Is she gone or is she not? Is the song sad or not? Melancholy? We love it. (Not Stevo.) Hugs! #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #31 Födelsedag (Birthday). After just about half the list we crack open the wonderful album "Mazarin," named after a pastry they feasted on while recording the album. Per claims. Likely he's fibbing since in the dark woods of Skåne, where AGM is located, there are no mazarins... Anyway, the song "Födelsedag" is from this album and is special in a way that Per plays the bass on it. Why? According to Per he was "sitting the closest to the bass guitar" so there you go. Written in August, 2002 it certainly wasn't written on Per's B-day! "Here I am/Today it's my birthday" #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #32 Småstadsprat (Small Town Talk.) Here it is, the Swedish version of "Small Town Talk," this time with Lasse Winnerbäck as the duet partner. A very low-key, and again sad, song. The man fell in love with a girl, and she left. It's unclear if they ever were a couple or not. Like we mentioned a few weeks ago, this was also recorded in English with Nick Lowe. Small town gossip can really ruin things for you... If you want to play it on the geet: Capo 2. Verse D D A D G Em A Bm G A, chorus Em7 D A, solo Am Fmaj7 G6 Am Fmaj7 G #per60

Per's 60 for 60. #33 I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend. A Ramones cover, from 2002! It's rather common for Per and Gyllene, and even Roxette, to play covers from time to time. It's not as usual that the songs are recorded and released though. This story is kind of funny: A bunch of Swedish rock bands such as Hellacopters, Wilmer X and Backyard Babies decided to record a tribute album to The Ramones; The Song Ramones the Same. Per heard about this project and wanted in, so he recorded this little ditty and also "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment." Only "Boyfriend" was included on the actual album. As a side note, "Gimme" includes the exact same guitar solo as "Opportunity Nox" performed by Per. #per60

This is the last teaser before we finally spill the beans in two days. Have we mentioned we even obtained our very own ISBNs for this?

Per's 60 for 60. #34 Inte tillsammans, inte isär (Not Together, Not Apart.) Another one of those songs about a struggling couple. This one can't be together, but they also can't be apart. When summer is here, they are all in love, but then when fall comes, they can't be together anymore. What to do, what to do? A great song from "Scener" also released on an EP with Marlon Brando on the sleeve. Marie Fredriksson sings the song too, since it's a duet. The sound is very Gyllene of this era. When a morning turns August, the times of loneliness begin, because we can't be together and we can't be apart. Per changed the lyrics when he performs it live because "(he) didn't like them". The demo from 1984 has totally different lyrics. Speaking of that demo, we don't know who sings on it, but she really can't sing... And how about that accordion solo in the finished product? #per60
