Anyone

The second official single release from ‘Have A Nice Day’…it’s big and beautiful.

“Anyone who ever kissed in the rain, knows the whole meaning”.

Released May 1999, and very reminiscent of the big ballads of the 1960’s. You kinds of hear Burt Bacharach or even Phil Spector and his ‘wall of sound’. Indeed, early demo versions included one of Phil’s produced tracks ‘I Love How You Love Me‘, originally recorded by ‘The Paris Sisters‘.

It always reminds me of the UK #1 single from Cilla Black, ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart‘ but better of course. Sorry Cilla.

Reviews at the time were very positive of the track…

“Heartbreak drips from every note on this track with Marie desperately trying to convey to the listener the pain of losing someone that you love and delivering moving lines like “lying awake in an ocean of teardrops, I float away”… One of Roxette’s finest recordings”.
Renowned for Sound, 1999

The song was recorded at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm (formally Polar Studios), and as the story goes, was recorded in one take. Go Marie!

As for the video, well it’s another beauty directed again by Jonas Åkerlund. This one was slightly more controversial as it hinted towards a suicide attempt in the ocean and was subsequently banned from airplay by MTV Europe at the time. It is of course a hard watch now.

Anyone‘ was a so-so hit across Europe, and it was of course one of three songs from ‘Have A Nice Day‘ to get the Spanish translation treatment. It became ‘Alguien‘, which translates back as ‘Someone‘. Close enough, lol.

We got to hear it live during the ‘Room Service Tour‘, in a kind of medley with ‘Crash! Boom! Bang!‘. Sublime.
