Crush On You + Cooper

Imaginary single time, the first double aa side, with the opening track ‘Crush On You’ and the odd but simply marvellous ‘Cooper’.

“I got a Crush on You…”

“It’s a cousin to ‘The Look’… I really wanted it to be opening track for ‘Have A Nice Day’. I really like the demo very much”.
Per Gessle – The Per Gessle Archives, 2014.

Crush On You was originally planned to be an official single, but the release was cancelled last minute. As such an official music video was never filmed, however, remixes had been commissioned and produced by Almighty in the UK. Their cuts were high-energy club remixes all ready for the single campaign, alas it wasn’t mean to be.

The remix master tapes were locked away in The Roxette + Almighty Vaults for many years, and because the single cancellation happened no official promotional formats were pressed. For over a decade fans only knew of the remixes through rumours and low-quality leaks. Numerous fake ‘promotional CDs’ were floating around, but none were of course official…

That is, until Xmas 2013 when Almighty opened up their own Vault, issuing a special limited edition CD promo when fans finally got to hear two remixes in high quality for the very first time. Then in 2022, the ‘ROX RMX project was released featuring the remixes in all their glory.

Crush On You‘ would have been an amazing second release and follow-up to ‘Wish I Could Fly‘ and really showcase the variety of material on ‘Have A Nice Day‘.

Despite not being an official single, we did get amazing remixes, plus we got to hear it live. It was the opening track for the ‘Room Service Tour‘ in 2001. Then it was featured during the ‘XXX 30th Anniversary Tour‘ in 2015. It kicked ass on both Tours.

“Then there’s a sound on the telephone…”

Cooper‘ was always an immediate standout track on the album. It’s just one of those tracks that speaks to you, very evocative and almost like a music mini-novel. I like this side of Per’s songwriting. ‘Closer To God‘ was a very welcome surprise too. Often mistaken as a remix, it isn’t, it’s an alternative version of the album version…

“…I thought Clarence did an amazing job arranging the strings…
I told him we should do an alternative version where the strings take more central role in the production…
Basically made as I was such a big fan of those string sections”.
Per Gessle, Bag of Trix – Per Gessle Talks, 2020.
