The Daily Roxette presents ROX40
Beautiful Things
Wrapping up the ‘singles’ from the ‘Have A Nice Day’ era, with the album closer, ‘Beautiful Things’…
“Is there someone I can talk to?”
Goosebumps. This is the ultimate album closer and why it wasn’t a single is simply baffling. We ask this a lot, but WHO actually picked the singles?! This would have been a great final single for the ‘Have A Nice Day‘ era don’t you think? Despite its lush soundscape, it was left confined to the album.
The song had quite the journey too, with various demos being made before its final version came to be.
“‘Beautiful Things, Terrible Things‘ was written for the ‘The World According To Gessle‘ album but didn’t make the cut.
I believe I wanted to write a ‘John Lennon-solo’ type of song; it feels quite inspired by his ‘Double Fantasy‘ record.
It’s Micke Syd playing drums on the demo, and MP playing bass and guitars”.
“I gave the lyrics to Marie a few years later and she wrote some fantastically beautiful music for them.
I added a small new lyrical section towards the end that was needed…
By the way, Christoffer Lundquist plays a fantastic bass, and the string arrangement is tip-top.
I believe Clarence did that”.

The song was reborn and became the song we largely know today. Marie’s own demo from 1998 remains officially unreleased (it’s out there if you look hard enough), but for now it’s in The Roxette Vault. We hope this, along with other demos will eventually get released.
For now, that wraps up the ‘singles’ from ‘Have A Nice Day‘ as part of the #ROX40 Countdown. I think it’s now time we ordered some ‘Room Service‘…
