June Afternoon

Breaking the actual release order, as we just had to start on 1st June with June Afternoon! “It’s a bright June Afternoon, wah wah…”

Happy 1st June! Summer has arrived…

YES, we know. ‘The Look ’95‘ was the official first single release (in the UK anyway) to begin the promotional activities for Roxette’s first greatest hits collection, the flawless ‘Don’t Bore Us – Get To The Chorus!“.  Elsewhere, the first official single from the collection itself was of course ‘You Don’t Understand Me‘, however, seeing as it’s 1st June we’re mixing things up.

“It’s a bright June Afternoon, it never gets dark, wah wah!”

Summer has officially started. We need pop and sunshine.

June Afternoon‘ is a fantastic opening track on ‘DBUGTTC‘ and was a successful sounding mix of Roxette and Gyllene Tider. Largely due to the fact that the song was recorded by Gyllene Tider with help from the Roxette camp.  It’s another one of those songs for us that was an instant like.

“I don’t think it was written for Roxette in the first place.
It was written for ‘The World According To Gessle’ album…
It was a favourite for Clarence and Marie when I played it
so we used it for Roxette”

Per Gessle, In Conversation with Sven Lindström, The Per Gessle Archives, 2014

Ironically, the single wasn’t actually released during the summer months. Released as the second official single from ‘DBUGTTC‘ in January 1996, which was totally out of sync with the song itself. Strange. It wasn’t a massive hit, largely due to it being a limited region release, also, most people were investing in the actual album which had become an instant best-seller success.

The equally colourful video was another masterpiece by Jonas Åkerlund. We love the rainbow room, as well as the green ‘Beatles‘-esque features. We didn’t even mind Marie’s wig! Check out the video.

Sadly, we never got to hear ‘June Afternoon‘ performed live, not even at the London Promo gig. There were some TV performances, alas, confined to lip-syncs. Still fun to watch.

What do you think? Is it time for ‘June Afternoon‘ to make its live debut?

– June Afternoon was simply crying out for the remix treatment. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
