The Daily Roxette presents ROX40
Sleeping In My Car
Crash!Boom!Bang! an explosive start to a new era… and it’s a goodie!
“I’ll tell you what I’ve done, I’ll tell what I’ll do…”
‘Phwoar’ 1994! …
After studio time in Stockholm, London and the stunning Italian island of Capri, Roxette had been busy again, getting their fifth studio album ready.
On first play to EMI however, the feedback to Per was that it was great, but they “couldn’t hear the first single“. Surprise surprise and *face-palm*.
Massively p*ssed off, Per went home and wrote ‘Sleeping In My Car‘. He got the gang together quickly, and it was recorded. The first single was a banger.
EMI were happy. ‘Crazy About You‘ was dropped from the 15 track album, replaced by ‘Sleeping In My Car‘.
Roxette were back, another #1 in Sweden, and riding high on the world charts. Another hit.
I bought this one blind. I’d not heard the single on the radio or elsewhere. My first listen was from the CD single I rushed out to buy. “Headphones on” I was instantly hooked and seduced by the drum lead into the chorus.
Another super cool video, shot in a Car Park and directed by Michael Geoghegan. Marie sporting her new shorter cropped “do” and Per with his long locks. They looked refreshed.
Roxette were invited to perform the song at the annual MTV Europe Music Awards in 1994. Introduced by Tom Jones … “they show no signs of stopping yet“. An understatement if there ever was one.
Roxette promoted the single and album heavily, and hit the road during 1994/1995 on the Crash! Boom! Bang! World Tour. The song has been featured on every Tour since, and quite rightly so.
Roxette returned to Top of the Pops in the UK performing the song live, introduced by Robbie Williams… “With a definite fetish for cars, first they were ‘joyriding’ in them, now they’re sleeping in them, it’s Roxette with ‘Sleeping In My Car'”.
During the Tour Roxette were invited to perform in Beijing, China.
Chinese Government Officials demanded that they alter the ‘sexy’ lyrics for ‘Sleeping In My Car‘. “We agreed, but didn’t change them in the end“, according to Per, naughty!
China didn’t mellow to the song either, as it was removed from the ‘Charm School Deluxe Version‘ in 2011.
A firm favourite in the Roxette catalogue!
