★ Roxette do euro-dance, almost techno… with a children’s choir (and some singing ducks in the video!) ★

Stars‘ was the official third single from ‘Have A Nice Day‘, released July 1999. It was a shock departure with an experimental venture in euro-dance, almost full-on techno!

Let’s get this out of the way first off, this is the only song out of the entire Roxette catalogue that I do not care for. Which, when you think about it, is an amazing success rate. Out of the hundreds of released songs, there’s only ONE! Amazing.

I’ve softened a little bit over the years of course, and have to say I do like the ‘TravellingDubai Soundcheck Version of the song much more. The piano ballad version performed as part of the ‘Room Service‘ album launch gigs was also a great version.

Per was inspired by an old song, Keith West’s 1967 single ‘Excerpt from a Teenage Opera‘, namely the children’s choir element. If you don’t know the song, give it a listen…

The British remix producers ‘Almighty‘ also returned resulting in the version that was released as the actual single version, the aptly named ‘Almighty Radio Edit‘, plus a couple of other versions too.

The single was a hit throughout Europe, mainly in Scandinavia, whereas in Germany, it was the album’s best performing single. In the UK, it was released on multiple formats, including the final 2-Part CD Single. It didn’t do very well here in the UK, reaching #56.

The video was a lot of fun, directed by Anton Corbijn, and featured a very regal Marie and singing Ducks! What’s not to like?

We got to hear ‘Stars’ many times over the years on stage too, first as part of the ‘Room Service Tour‘ in 2001, and it still lives on today.
