“Well, now I know what the fuss is about…”

Opening ‘Charm School‘ with a mouth harp, pounding drums and plenty of guitar, ‘Way Out‘ immediately announced the rockier side of Roxette’s first new studio album in a decade.

Our original TDR album review was particularly enthusiastic, comparing its upbeat feel to ‘June Afternoon‘, as well as hearing echoes of Per’s ‘Stupid‘.

When it came to choosing the album’s follow-up singles, EMI took an unusual regional approach. While ‘Speak To Me‘ was selected in several territories, EMI Germany chose ‘Way Out‘, following the strong German performance of ‘She’s Got Nothing On‘.

A video was also created during the ongoing and massive Charm School World Tour, mixing footage of Roxette travelling, backstage and performing during soundcheck. It suited the song perfectly, capturing a band very much back on the road rather than placing Per and Marie inside another elaborate studio production.

‘Way Out‘ also earned itself a place on the Tour, appearing during the encore at the opening show in Kazan and at numerous concerts that followed.

Was it a right single choice? We think so. ‘Way Out‘ is short, immediate and full of the guitars and slightly off-kilter Gessle pop that Roxette do so well. It may not feature Marie prominently, but as a blast of upbeat ‘Charm School‘ Roxette, it deserved its moment.

Oh and, the cover photo is by Thomas E and it’s another goodie. Cover designed by the other Thomas. So confusing isn’t it.
