The Weight of the World

Acoustic Roxette time again, yay! And what a beauty… ‘The Weight of the World’. One of my all time favourite Roxette outtakes.

“Sunday morning, I’m still hiding in bed…”

Originally written for the ‘Room Service‘ in the autumn of 1999, alas it wasn’t meant to be and it didn’t make it.

“’It felt finished when I did the demo…so I didn’t want to have a big production.
We decided when we were doing ‘Room Service‘ that we didn’t want acoustic songs…
There is one track, ‘It Takes You No Time To Get Here‘ that starts of acoustic guitar,
otherwise it’s a big production album”.

It’s another simple yet beautiful acoustic ballad. Both Per and Marie shine here. It amazes us that such a quality song was considered a left-over at the time, an outtake. We did eventually hear this as a b-side to ‘A Thing About You‘ and also as an extra track on the Bonus EP with some editions of ‘The Ballad Hits‘ album.

That’s not the last we heard of the song though…

“We also recorded it for the ‘Travelling‘ album in a slightly refreshed album…For that album it was the opposite and we needed some acoustic tracks…’Travelling‘ as you know was recorded on the road and there wasn’t a lot of time to record a lot of tracks,
so we looked back in the vaults and what did we find… both Marie and I like the song it a lot so we included it”.

Per Gessle, TPGA, 2014

As a fan of acoustic Roxette, this is right up my street, it’s just stunning. I play it a lot.

Whether it’s single material or not is not the point here, it was a great link between ‘Room Service‘ and ‘The Ballad Hits‘ hence it’s inclusion here on the #ROX40 Countdown.

Thoughts? One of the best acoustic Roxette songs?
