Spending My Time

Time for another timeless ballad, the mighty fine ‘Spending My Time’… (ooo that rhymes).

Spending My Time‘ was supposed to kick-off the whole ‘Joyride‘ era as its lead single, that is, if EMI had got their way.  Roxette stepped in, as they were adamant that ‘Joyride‘ was the perfect lead, and they were right.

Spending My Time‘ came later with a very expensive music video.  It was another hit worldwide, alas, the USA, due to Record Company woes let the side down.

This could have, and should have easily been a massive success in America.  Regardless, the rest of the world loved it.

It quickly became a classic, performed on multiple Tours in many forms.  The Joyride Tour had pretty much the full album version with a lovely intro, we got to hear an acoustic take for MTV Unplugged in 1993, a solo piano version by Marie during 1994’s Crash! Boom! Bang! World Tour, and so on.

It remains a firm sing-a-long favourite at shows even today.

It’ll always be one of my personal favourite singles, especially as it was the first time I heard ‘The Sweet Hello, The Sad Goodbye‘.  I couldn’t quite believe that such a song didn’t make the final album cut.  The standard for b-sides was extremely high!  The ‘Electric Dance Remix‘ was also a welcome addition.

I’ve dug out a video we shot at The O2 in London (Monday 13th July 2015), which was sadly the last time I got to see Marie perform.  It reminds me how things can change ever so fast.  She truly was an inspiration, battling through everything to put on a show from her throne, belting out yet another super song written by Per.

It would be great to hear the Live in Sydney 1991 versions, as Per has stated several times now, that “3 x Sydney concerts have been remastered and are pretty much ready to go”, however likely not to be released this year unfortunately.  It’s super exciting that they’re coming!
