The Heart Shaped Sea

First of the imaginary singles from ‘TOURISM’, with a personal favourite, ‘The Heart Shaped Sea’…

One of the most beautiful songs Per has written, in our humble opinion.

“It showed a different side to Roxette”.
Per Gessle, TPGA, 2014

Performed live during the Summer Joyride Tour, as well as performed during promotional performances (see below), and of course as part of MTV Unplugged in 1993, it was finally resurrected during the XXX 30th Anniversary Tour, and it was amazing to hear live at The O2 in London.

It’s almost like a folk song, in the sort of ‘Tim Harding’ sort of tradition,
late 1960’s, New York-ish fold tradition”

Marie Fredriksson, ‘Talking About Tourism’, 1992

The two demos for this were great to hear as part of The Per Gessle Archives. Both written and demoed April-May 1991, just as the ‘Joyride album was released, and with the Joyride Tour was on horizon.  The version we ended up with on ‘TOURISM was recorded at Ocean Way in LA. Jonas couldn’t figure out how to play the guitar parts so they flew in MP Persson over to California to record it.

“Best phone call ever!”

MP, TPGA, 2014

We were looking through our files and discovered an unofficial remix too – an instrumental in the style of Cafe Del Mar, very chilled, summery beats. It’s cool. No idea who was responsible for it, or what the actual remix is called other than what we’ve mentioned here. See if you can find it our there on the t’interweb.

So, what do you think? Would you have welcomed ‘The Heart Shaped Sea‘ as a single during the ‘TOURISM‘ era?

It remains one of my (Thomas2) most played Roxette songs.
