The Daily Roxette presents ROX40
She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio)
Roxette return with their first new studio album in a decade…and it’s a belter!
“She takes my breath away…”
Four years after ‘Reveal‘, Roxette were back. Properly back.
‘She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio)‘ arrived in January 2011 as the first single from ‘Charm School‘, the first completely new studio album since ‘Room Service‘ almost ten years earlier.
What had begun as a cautious reunion around ‘One Wish‘ and ‘Reveal‘ in 2006 had gradually become something much bigger. Marie had returned to the stage alongside Per during the Night of the Proms concerts in 2009, Roxette played a series of European shows during 2010, and somewhere along the way the idea of recording an entirely new album stopped seeming quite so impossible.

Per’s T&A Demo of ‘She’s Got Nothing On‘ was recorded on August 7, 2009, making it one of the earlier songs written for what eventually became ‘Charm School‘. The finished recording brought Marie firmly back to the front, wrapped around guitars, synths and a thumping electronic pulse that sounded unmistakably Roxette while pushing their sound into 2011.
When the new album was announced in December 2010, Roxette’s management described it as “updated classic Roxette”. ‘She’s Got Nothing On‘ was perhaps the clearest example of exactly that, combining one of Per’s instantly recognisable pop choruses with a much more contemporary production.
There was also a new video, directed by Mats Udd, with Per and Marie performing against an intensely bright white background while a rather energetic house party unfolds around them. After the nostalgic anniversary feel of ‘One Wish‘, this was very deliberately Roxette in the present tense, and the comeback connected…
‘She’s Got Nothing On‘ became Roxette’s strongest new European single in years, reaching #12 in Germany, while the accompanying ‘Charm School‘ album went all the way to #1 there. The song also became a considerable radio hit, eventually climbing to #5 on Radio Express’s worldwide airplay chart, while in the UK it entered the Radio Airplay Chart at #31 as the highest new entry of the week.
Two further interpretations arrived courtesy of Swedish producers Adrian Lux and Adam Rickfors, taking the electronic side of the song even further. The various remixes were later collected alongside Per’s original demo on ‘Charm School Revisited‘.

Most importantly though, ‘She’s Got Nothing On‘ wasn’t promoting a temporary reunion or another greatest hits collection. Roxette had made twelve completely new songs, and within weeks of the album’s release they were heading out on a World Tour that would ultimately become far bigger than originally planned.
Looking back, it makes ‘Reveal‘ feel almost like the end of the first chapter of Roxette’s return, while ‘She’s Got Nothing On‘ kicks the doors open on the next one.
