Turn Of The Tide

And so we reach the end of our ‘Travelling‘ era with one final imaginary single, and a song that had been waiting a very long time for its moment…

“Love will never be easy, how hard I try…”

“It’s probably Marie’s best vocal performance since ‘My World, My Love, My Life’”
Per Gessle, The Daily Roxette, 2012

‘Turn Of The Tide‘ dates all the way back to the ‘Have A Nice Day‘ era. Per recorded the first T&A Demo on September 30, 1997, followed by another on January 5, 1999, but the song never made the album. Per later explained that Roxette already had ‘Anyone‘ and ‘Salvation‘, so another big ballad simply wasn’t needed. It wasn’t a quality issue, as the song and it’s lyrics are sublime.

More than a decade later, Roxette finally returned to it…

Rather than dusting off an old studio recording, ‘Turn Of The Tide‘ was recorded completely afresh in Sun City during the sessions that became ‘Travelling‘. This time Marie took centre stage, backed by acoustic guitars, strings, drums and Clarence Öfwerman’s keyboards, and Marie sounds magnificent.

TDR’s original ‘Travelling‘ review was particularly enthusiastic, describing the song as timeless Roxette and singling out Marie’s vocal as one of the album’s great moments. Which makes its album-track status feel like something of a missed opportunity.

‘Turn Of The Tide‘ has everything you’d want from a classic Roxette ballad: a huge melody, a slow build, acoustic guitars and, right at the centre of it all, Marie Fredriksson doing what only Marie could do.

Should it have been a single? Absolutely. After waiting fifteen years to become a Roxette recording, it deserved considerably more than simply being track three on the album.

And with that, our ‘Travelling‘ journey comes to an end… Album #10 next, sadly, the final Roxette studio album, ‘Good Karma‘, but we do have a couple of stops on the way before we get to that.
