Reveal

Closing off the ‘HITS!’ era with a beautiful ballad, the simple but classy ‘Reveal’…so underrated.

“I don’t mind showing for you…”

Following ‘One Wish‘, Roxette continued their 20th Anniversary celebrations (#ROX20!) with ‘Reveal‘, the second of the two new songs recorded during their return to the studio in 2006.

Per’s T&A Demo was recorded on April 9, 2006, before the finished version took shape during sessions at Christoffer Lundquist’s Aerosol Grey Machine Studio in Skåne that summer…

“‘Reveal‘ was meant to be THE single. ‘One Wish‘ was meant to be the b-side.
But….. it was the first time we were in the studio after Marie got sick and it didn’t go so well….
The wind went out of the sails for both Christoffer and Clarence, it turned into a strange production,
so we decided to focus on ‘One Wish‘ instead (where my voice took up more space)…”

“I’ve always liked ‘Reveal‘, feels like it deserved a nicer fate.
Those were some very tough days in the studio down in Skåne.
Long time ago now…”

Where ‘One Wish‘ was bright, immediate pop, ‘Reveal‘ showed the softer side of Roxette.

Marie takes the lead on a simple but beautiful ballad built around piano, guitars and beats, giving fans another chance to hear her unmistakable voice on a brand new Roxette recording after several years away, and despite the difficult sessions, the Team delivered.

Reveal‘ was confirmed as the follow-up single at the end of 2006, although the version released in February 2007 differed from the album recording. A new single version was prepared with a revised middle-eight, while The Attic and Kleerup were brought in to create two very different remixes.

The Attic transformed the song into a much more energetic electronic pop track, while Kleerup took it somewhere darker and more atmospheric. The European CD single collected both remixes alongside the new single version and the ‘One Wish‘ video.

Commercially, ‘Reveal‘ didn’t match its predecessor. ‘One Wish‘ had reached #2 in Sweden, while ‘Reveal‘ peaked at #59, spending a single week on the chart. It was also a much quieter release. There was no major new video campaign and, once the anniversary celebrations were over, Roxette effectively disappeared again while Per and Marie returned to their respective solo careers.

That makes ‘Reveal‘ an interesting milestone in hindsight. As for almost four years it remained the “final newRoxette single, until the glorious ‘She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio) arrived in 2011, and a comeback few could have predicted in 2007 became very real indeed.

Reveal‘ remains an important part of that gentle 2006 return. Two new songs had become two new Roxette singles, and the door back to Roxette was now very definitely open.

For the eagle-eyed amongst you, yes, the cover contains images from another RoxettePuppet Video’ created for ‘Reveal‘.

The video is set in a Bowling Alley (like the Hits! photoshoot) and follows Per and Marie on a dreamy adventure where magical things happen. Even Clarence and Christoffer feature. Clarence as the barman at ‘Salvation Station‘, and Christoffer singing karaoke at Leif’s Lounge!

Alas, at the time of writing this, I’ve just not had the time to finish it…one day.
