Per Gessle’s Roxette – a review

Another tour, another book/DVD? Yes this has been true before, and surely it will continue that way. But there’s no one putting a gun against your head telling you to buy them, right?

This latest book, “Per Gessle’s Roxette Quotes & Pics Around Europe in 2018″ is kind of tiny, on purpose. It’s slightly smaller than a 7″ single, a DVD is 5” in comparison. It’s a limited edition in 1,000 copies all signed by Per and individually numbered. Anders Roos has taken the photos, and the band has been quoted. Simple as that. About half of the shots are from backstage, rehearsals and makeup being put on and soforth. The rest are from the stage. The Daily Roxette put out a book of our own from this tour too, obviously we didn’t have any backstage photos, but only from the performances. You can’t really compare the books, as Anders’ book is more of a memento, sort of a diary I would say, while ours is a book about the tour, from the audience’s perspective.

I like the book, it brings back memories, which I suppose it’s meant to do. I’m even in it, even though you have to know it’s me to find me! Other than that there are very few audience shots, and why not, it’s the band you want to see.

Many of the photos have been highly processed, in different colors to match some of the quotes. Speaking of the quotes, the guys all seem to have loved this tour! Magnus Börjeson has a nice memory from London “There was always this section with an improvised banter between me and Per on stage, and you never know where that was going to lead. At Hammersmith Odeon in London I saw Nick Lowe in the audience, which added some pressure given how funny he is. I can’t remember what I said, but I saw Nick lean back and laugh, which made my day.” It’s a good thing Nick wasn’t in Linköping, where the banter ended in nothing. Per just raised his eyebrows and shook his head and played a song instead.

There’s also a DVD included, from Gothenburg. It’s not the best DVD I’ve seen, but I don’t think it’s meant to be. Again, more like a memory, a keepsake. If you saw the tour, get the book, if you didn’t you may as well not. There won’t be any reprints as part of the plates are inserted into the books as a special gift.

Oh and one last thing – the book is nearly impossible to back into its sleeve once you’ve taken it out!
