Song: Like Lovers Do
Album: Pearls of Passion
Year: 1986
Track: #11

Hooray for ’80s pop! Love this track!

“Like Lovers Do” doesn’t pretend to be anything that it’s not. It’s a proudly, fun, camp, cheesy ball of sunshine that brightens up the back end of the Pearls of Passion album.

This song makes you wanna smile and dance around like an idiot – and when it comes to dancing like an idiot, they don’t come much bigger than me!

It’s got Per. It’s got Marie, They’re trading lines. It’s got that Jonas guitar. It’s got those synths. Oh my goodness, this is so tragically fun, I love it!

Let’s not try and read some great philosophical meaning into this song. Let’s not pretend this song is the best Roxette song recorded. It’s not. This is just a bit of bubblegum! A dirty, rotten, guilty pleasure that few would admit to liking, but to hell with it. It’s sparkles, rainbows, unicorns and sunshine with this song!

And doesn’t Marie know how to belt out some notes? “Oh, I’m drowning in an ocean of emotion” – wow, she just nails it! Didn’t the late EMI boss Rolf Nygren say in the “Really Roxette” documentary that Marie could add so much emotion to nonsense lyrics? Well, here it is, case in point! You actually believe that she’s heartbroken as she drowns in an “ocean of emotion”!

This song has been overlooked and probably rightfully so. It hasn’t aged very well. It’s dated. It screams 1986 and the chances of this ever being resurrected in any shape or form are about as likely as Magnus finally deciding on his favourite Roxette album. Do we honestly need to wax lyrical anymore about this outrageously eighties pop gem? I don’t think so. It is what it is. So I’ll just shut up and let you press play as we re-visit this fun piece of bubblegum!

Agree? Disagree?

Thoughts from The Daily Roxette crew:

Thomas: I used to love this, one of my true ’80s favorites. I still like it, but not as much. Probably because of the production which hasn’t aged well, especially the drums and the keys. And not to mention the suicidal Dance Passion album. Isn’t there a Swedish version somewhere?

Paul: You’ve used all the camp words there are to describe this!  PoP is probably the album I listen to the least, some decent songs (this isn’t one of them for me), but it sounds too dated for me to listen to now
